Rock and/or Roll

Earlier I did a post about the new rap and top 40 I’ve been catching up on. Kanye may have claimed that rap is the new rock and roll, but most people, including Jimmy Kimmel, knows not to take him too seriously.

So if you want some actual rock’n’roll to consume on this friday start with Turf War. I talked before about how amazing their first album was, and now Rollo & Grady posted a link to a collection of covers they are releasing through their tumblr that includes Sam the Sham’s Wooly Bully and Waylon Jenning’s Ain’t Living Long Like This.

The that R&O post caught my eye is because I have been bingeing on Waylon ever since I saw in the Spotify feed that Brendy listened to a few.  Ain’t Living Long Like This, Luckenbach, Texas, Good Hearted Woman, Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right, or the Theme from Dukes of Hazard are all great jams.  Thanks, Brendy.

Another jam I found on Spotify was Fats Domino’s Jambalaya which lead me to see that many people had covered that song originally written by Hank Williams.  One person that covered it was John Fogerty, but the album, Blue Ridge Rangers, was not on spotify or even released on cd.  It’s unavailability made me obsess about listening to it.  After finally finding a way to, I found it is more straight country than CCR’s chooglin’, but still really good.  Check out his cover of Hearts of Stone or She Thinks I Still Care.  On the Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again, he does covers of John Prine‘s Paradise, Ricky Nelson’s Garden Party, and the Everly Brother‘s When Will I Be Loved.

If that is not enough, you can go back to Rollo and Grady and their Youtube video sessions to check out Natural Child.

Or if the better antidote to too much rap and top 40 is watching Zach Galifianakis hit Justin Bieber with a belt, then here is that:

Like I’m Illuminati

Everytime I dj I realize how out of much more out of touch I’ve become since the last time. Sometimes it is just annoying because I don’t have the songs ready to play, like a few weeks ago when I didn’t realize that twerking had invaded Edison Park or that we didn’t have any twerking songs on the ipods. Then other times it is annoying because I miss out on cool shit; so here is all that shit all at once:

While making sure we had the right songs for a Cornballs Dance, we talked about the disco sound creeping into top 40 currently with Daft Punk’s new single “Lose Yourself To Dance“, JT’s “Take Back The Night” and Robin Thicke’s “Give it 2 U” (watch this one, if only for 2 Chainz’s Ass Float – thats right, Ass Float), about Trinidad Jame’s parody, “All Rolls Everything” (Austin’s find), about Major Lazer’s Bubble Butt (thanks? Lunt Ave block party) and Mike and Matt showing me Rick Ross’s Pineapple Slices (which is Rick Ross rapping while grossly/sloppily eating chicken) and the Yeezus parody “I Am A Dog“.

But most importantly, Migos’ “Versace” featuring the 3-Ply rapper, Wheelchair Jimmy.  Please watch the video,  try to get through all of it, then try not to sing it for the next two days.  And if you thought that was annoying, try the other Migos song, Hannah Montana:
