Feeling Randy?

So here are some more that I found that don’t deserve their own post:

All work and all play makes Jack…?

It has been a while since I checked in with Jack White and Third Man Records, and it is not a surprise that there are a bunch of things going on. Via the instagram, Jack White was recently selling candy on the street and hanging out at Pann’s Diner in LA, probably to setup the selling of TMR records and record players at Whole Foods in California.  He is apparently wrapping up two more albums.

Comedian Rory Scovel has recorded at Third Man.  A new band that I found while creeping on the site is the Haden Triplets.  Daughters of bass legend Charlie Haden and produced by Ry Cooder, this seems like a great album from what I have listened to so far. They have beautiful voices that remind me of the Emmylou Harris, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch combo from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack or other TMR favorite, Secret Sisters.  Here are the soundcloud samples that TMR put up on their site:

And I love it.

Via Neil: Broken Bells were on Letterman the other day promoting their new album and celebrating the 50 years since the Beatles came to the US. Danger Mouse used the sampling skills that made the Grey Album happen to be “backed” (according to youtube title) by Ringo. Apparently, Flaming Lips with Sean Lennon, Lenny Kravitz (doing Get Back) and Sting (doing Drive My Car) will also perform Beatles hits on the show this week:

And apparently there is a 2 Hour GRAMMY tribute the occasion on the 9th.

Foreign Policy Musings

I appreciate the attempt to connect the world of academia to Kendrik Lamar though I’m on the fence on its success. Does the Bruce count as academic blogging?

Maybe last week or the week before Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates went on the Daily Show and was extremely likable. I was shocked, confused, and intrigued. His memoir is out and I think it would be worth reading or the interview was a great marketing strategy…

I’ve committed to my first free online class (Women’s Health and Human Rights) with Ed X/Stanford but Harvard, Berkley, and MIT also offer loads. They seem to be what you make them but if anyone is interested I’m thinking of the following: “Justice“, “US Health Policy“, “National Security” Some started already or are offered in a few months but they seem to come back again quickly for another round.

Brice put this up but it is hilarious and worth a revisit if you already saw it. The Onion series on Biden.
