If you are going to do a cover of a song and release it, you should bring something to it rather than just playing a copy. Someone smarter than me told me that and it’s a good way to look at covers. I’m not a huge fan of changing lyrics so that different people are referenced, but the funk Billy Paul adds to this cover of Wings Let ‘Em In great. With so many covers of songs by a the Beatles or by a Beatle out there, it is nice choice too. Listen for yourself:


The actual recorded song is just as good.

On the topic of Beatle’s covers where the artist brings something new to the song, that smarter person referenced above (Mike), showed me Isaac Haye’s cover of Something.
