The last post mentions how Charles Bradley has been well hyped already but I realized that I never posted anything about him on this blog. He is backed by Daptone Records house band, the Menahan Street Band, some of the same guys that back Sharon Jones. Charles’ voice evokes the long road he has taken (according to his bio) to be where he is. Though the full band behind him is great, this is the video that got me into him:

Outside of the amazing but already well hyped (at least on the blogs) Charles Bradley and Michael Kiwanuka, Rollo & Grady’s post about the Top 21 New Artists of 2011 highlights an amazing band from Atlanta worth giving a listen called Turf War. They have been compared to the Black Lips in their straight up rock and roll sound and from their fun and raucous shows. From their twitter account, they seem like a good time.

White Does Williams
I don’t know if this idea was stolen from Wilco and Billy Bragg in their Mermaid Avenue movie about the lost notebook of Woody Guthrie, but this promises to be more entertaining. Hank Williams, dying at 29, left a series of songs that he never recorded. A bunch of famous artists recorded them, including Jack White, which you can hear over at Rolling Stone.

Bill Burr
I tried giving Whitney Cumming’s show, Whitney, a watch based off of the recommendations of other comedians I listen to. Then realize they weren’t recommendations as much as they were “hey, that other comedian has a show…” Though her time on the recent Comedy Central Roasts were funny, both her latest standup special and new show are not what I find funny. So I was nervous about watching Bill Burr’s comedy special on Netflix based off of the same recommendations. You might remember him from Chapelle show. Then I ended up watching it because I ran out of other things to watch and gave it a chance. I loved it. It is a good mix of the self deprecating humor that most comics have plus the boston tough guy shit that some other comics have. Here is a bit of it:
