Where the Wild Things Are

where-the-wild-things-are-posterI heard they were going to be making a live action version of “Where The Wild Things Are,” but never heard much beyond that. Above is the poster for the movie and the trailer apparently comes out on the 27th. Apparently the director is Spike Jonze, who has earned a special place in my heart from doing things like awesome skateboard videos, music videos, creating Jackass, and movies like Being John Malkovich.

Paddy Day!

shane_mcgowan

I don’t know how a holiday about an Irish saint bringing Jesus to Ireland turned into a holiday about getting drunk, but I do love this holiday. It would be funny to try to get friends to go out drinking in honor of St. Moses the Black or any of these six saintly badasses, but I digress.

In what ways can Tha Bruce and the interweb celebrate today? Here is a video about the origin of Shepherd’s Pie from Denis Leary. I did not know that Shepherd’s Pie was sheep balls, just like I didn’t know that blood pudding isn’t really just congealed blood until Rachel told me. Also, check out the pictures in the background of the intro and outro; Conan O’Brien is pictured to the left.

Its a stretch, but here’s a video called drunk history that is pretty funny.

But last year I put up a some songs, so why not do it again? I have been listening to a lot of the Pogues lately, particularly in a Shane McGowan and the Popes cd, Crock of Gold. Its not Shane at his best, but how couldn’t you love a face like that. Actually, it sounds like he’s just phoning it in; the first three songs have Paddy in the title and a song at the end is just nursery rhymes with some swearing in it. I make up my own words and add swear to songs daily, except without a backing band. Irish music isn’t that much different from country music.

Anyways, here are a couple songs to enjoy:

  1. “Paddy Rolling Stone”
  2. “Rock ‘n’ Roll Paddy”
  3. “Paddy Public Enemy No. 1”
  4. “Back In The County Hell”
  5. “Skipping Rhymes”

And here is a zip of the whole thing.

Beef!

shhcago.gifVia Pop Candy, a website called Slashfood picked the best sandwiches in the US. Lo and behold, Chicago got a couple of mentions.

Al’s Beef is on that list.  This is one of those Chicago institutions that is known probably as well as Giordano’s Pizza or Navy Pier, but Slashfood brought it up and I have been feinding that thinly sliced goodness for a couple of weeks.  The location closest to the Travers house had a promotion giving away 50 certificates granting a free beef every week for a year, and we got two of them.  Every Monday was free beefs for me and Joan.   They have been closed for three weeks (the cause might be too many free beefs) and I need my fix.

121x190featbestoffmariosiceNot feinding enough to get off my lazy ass and go to the original location in Little Italy.  Why I mention it and what makes the location so great, besides being the original, is that after you get a sandwich, there is Mario’s Italian Ice across the street for dessert.  I have heard stories about how it is a mob front or has some sort of mob connections, but that just adds to the allure of the place.  Kinda like the rumor that Demon Dogs used to steal their electricity from the El tracks above them:  Great story but greater food.
