Sometimes I feel like an old grandmother that cuts out clippings for relatives she thinks they would enjoy; just with internet findings. Well here are some more:
Don’t know if they deserve their own post, but I thought I would mention a band me and Ellen saw open for Those Darlins: Velcro Lewis. They have are a band that look and sound like Lynyrd Skynyrd, except the drummer is a big black guy with long dreads and does awesome heavy metal screaming throughout songs. Go on, just check out a few songs.
Kinda like some other internet famous indie bands, the Strange Boys come highly recommended by a bunch of blogs all at the same time. I saw them on Rollo & Grady just the other day, then today saw a post in Berkeley Place about them. So I listened to a bunch of songs by them and am now continuing the little wildfire of recommendations for them. I agree with Berkeley that they have a great low-fi, 50s garage rock sound that is perfect for fans of Black Lips, Black Keys, and Jay Reatard. The lead singer has a very nasal voice that comes off as more endearing/unique than it does annoying; kinda like the Kings of Leon. You can stream their whole album at their label Rough Trade Records(Same label as Rox), or cop some songs over at the Hype Machine.
So I guess even pet owners are racists. I know there is been a lot of love being thrown around with all the Haiti help and aid and various charity organizations but this is a little ridick… Virtually Home Chicago is a non for profit pet adoption agency in Chicago which helps via their website and clinic. They allow you to see online what pets are available so you can adopt them foster them, etc. Well i guess they are having a problem with the blacks. According to their site: “black cats and dogs have the lowest adoption rate and the highest euthanasia rate…” They even held a BENEFIT to raise awareness… I love pets and i love my dog but a BENEFIT to raise AWARENESS about BLACK pets!??? Whats next, a rally by the German shepherds about pure breeds? a benefit for poodles who cannot get the proper hair care they truly deserve?
