She & Him

Zooey Deschanel only keeps on getting cooler.  She was great as the sister in Almost Famous, the romantic interest in Elf and the batshit-crazy ex-girlfriend in Weeds.  I am sure that she is the reason that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” became so popular a couple years ago after she sang it in Elf.  She was supposed to be in a Janis Joplin biopic (even though it has been “indefinitely postponed”).  I used to think it was her in Fox’s Bones, but Kevin corrected me and pointed out that it was her sister, Emily.

Her newest  venture is in music with indie rocker M. Ward as She & Him.  They are mellow tunes, but you can’t deny that she has a great voice.  Great cover of a Miracles/Smokey Robinson song You Really got a Hold on Me.  Another good one is Sentimental Heart.  But I am not a talker; you can find a good review of their album on Stereogum.

The album doesn’t come out till March 18, but if Stereogum is reviewing it, you can probably find the whole cd floating around the internet.  Take a listen to some over at Hype Machine.

Hannah Montana Gets Creepier

Hannah Montana  This was supposed to be another post about old tv show nostolgia, but it took a bad turn.  TvSquad.com (via Pop Candy) has a post about the differences in age between actors and the characters they play.  I don’t really think Estelle Getty counts because old is old, but I digress.  I always thought that James Van Der Beek was 30 when he played Dawson Leery (it turns out he was only 21 or so), so I looked through the comments to see if anyone else cleared that up for me.  I did not find that, but what I did find out was that Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer was actually 280 years old making David Boreanaz the winner.  I found out that that it is funny to see people try to make corrections with their nerdiness only to be corrected in the next comment by someone even more nerdy stating that the character Angel was 26 when he became a vampire freezing him at that age.  But the more interesting thing that I found out was that Jason Earles from Hannah Montana is most likely 30 playing a teenager.  Here is what I grabbed from his wikipedia page:

Jason Daniel Earles (born in San Diego, California) is an American actor. His birthday is April 26. His birth year has been the subject of conflicting reports. Earles was 29 years old in January 2007, per USA Today. Earles’ resume gives a birth date of April 26, 1985. A story in the Houston Chronicle in July 2007 stated that he was 19 years old. Before moving to southern California, Earles lived in Billings, Montana, where he graduated from Rocky Mountain College in 2000. He has contributed cast memorabilia to the college’s fund raisers.

I know that not many people know or care about anything to do with Hannah Montana, but my roomate watches this show all the time and the show creeps me out (I watch some weird shit too, so I guess I can’t criticize).   There is  too much overacting, there’s Billy Ray Cyrus, there’s the fact that it only takes a wig to disguise her from everyone and then there’s this?   Whats next? Anthony Anderson?  The Hoff occasionally peaking into the window like a creep?

If Grandma thinks its funny…

You know that you are uncool when your Grandma tells you about the “funny youtube video” that you haven’t seen yet.  So if everyone else knew about this already, then sorry to waste your time.
Every once in a while I watch Jimmy Kimmel Live and he will end the show saying  “Our apologies to Matt Damon, we ran out of time.”  I thought it was funny but did not really get the joke (and apparently, it wasn’t anything more than that).
Then there was this video that Jimmy’s girlfriend, Sara Silverman, made for the show.

And then, of course, because that was so funny, Jimmy did this video that featured Robin Williams, Don Cheadle, Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt, Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate, Benji Madden, Joel Madden, Dicky Barrett, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Lance Bass, Dominic Monaghan, Meat Loaf, Pete Wentz, Joan Jett, Huey Lewis, Perry Farrell, Macy Gray, Rebecca Romijn, Josh Groban and Ben Affleck.

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend CD coverThese guys have catchy tunes and are gaining quite the following on the blogs.  First heard of them from Stereogum.com, but didn’t give them much of a chance till WXRT started playing them.  Vampire Weekend is definitely worth a listen if you are a fan of Graceland Paul Simon.  Try em for yourself over at Hype Machine.
